I’m in love with the new method of using color for spring/summer 2010. At Mercedes-Benz fashion week, they flipped the script on using brightly colored eye shadows. Instead of packing a shocking hue in an impenetrable layer from lash line to brow bone, makeup artists faded those same shades into washes of color throughout the eye and cheek. The result: a burst of color that will leave you face forward on this seasons beauty trend.
Fashion designers Derek Lam, Diane Von Furstenberg utilized this style masterfully to highlight the femininity of their models.
This water colored technique is a great way to incorporate those “party colors” into your everyday look. Try using a bright green, teal, or purple shadow with a nice fluffy blending brush.Press the color into your lower lash line, then fade the remnants towards your cheekbones. Instant chic! For nighttime fun, use those same fluffy brushes to softly wash two or three more colors onto the lid, crease, inner and outer corners of the eye. Add plenty of mascara, and your tie-died eyes will attract plenty of attention.

Experimenting with hair color can be such a fun experience but choosing the right color is a must when going permanent.
If you are due for style upgrade, you have to check out Flash Black, Paul Mitchell’s new hair color for men. The thing that I love most is that only takes 10 minutes to process. My other favorite thing is it conceals gray with the most amazing finish…hair looks healthy and has some shine, but not shiny like a brand new penny. It’s really great…men are going to love it!!! In the past, when I’ve asked men if they want to color their hair, they shy away. Why? Because when they think about hair color, they picture the color services they’ve seen on TV, or the process their moms, wives, sisters, and girlfriends have gone through. So instead of asking guys if they want to color their gray, I’ve started asking if they want me to make them sexier in just 10 minutes. They get really excited about that!!! During just the testing phases, I made at least ten men become dependent on Flash Back…Try it, and bring the sexy back in just 10 minutes!!

Have you heard of Miike Snow? No? Well, chances are you have but just didn’t know it.
Remember Brittany Spears’ mega dance single “Toxic”? Meet the men behind that monster hit. Honestly, I don’t remember how I stumbled upon Miike Snow. But I can tell you that there has not been a day since I first heard the band that I’ve not had them in constant rotation! Band members Christian Karlsson and Pontus Winnberg were childhood friends who spent time playing in bands and working on various projects. After separate moves to Stockholm they reunited in 2000. In 2004, whilst working on writing a pop album for someone else, the pair met the third band member, American songwriter Andrew Wyatt. There, the trio recorded their debut, self-titled album “Miike Snow” on Downtown Records. From the very first song (entitled “Animal”, also featured on the hit television show Gossip Girl), I was transported to some kind of 80’s pop-electronic heaven! While I admit I tend to gravitate to grittier, more guitar-oriented sounds, I was COMPLETELY floored by the groups’ mastery of melody and uncomplicated yet incredibly effective production. At times, Wyatt’s vocals and lyrical phrasing are eerily reminiscent of Peter Gabriel. Trust me, that is a huge compliment. His voice fits perfectly into the space Karlsson and Winnberg carve out for him with their precise, melody driven production. From the playful, summery “Song for No One” to the dance anthem “A Horse is Not a Home”, these guys display a versatility rarely heard in pop music today. The last tune on the album, entitled “Faker”, was so authentic and understated in its approach that one would swear it was 1967 and you were listening to the Fab Four’s best album yet. I promise you that with one listen, you can’t help but to be excited about Miike Snow’s next release!

Sade is one of music’s most elusive stars. She recently agreed to do an interview with the UK Times. She has always seemed reluctant to give interviews; however, Robert Sandall’s piece is an insightful feature on the first lady of UK soul. Yes we have deferred to the British press but she is a Brit so why not read about her by the people who know her best There’s a lot to be learned from Ms Adu on the responsibility that success and wealth bring as this snippet suggests…
‘…Frugality… is her style, but she’s generous with it… Her touring musicians comment on how fair she has been in awarding valuable songwriting credits for their contributions — a rare thing in the tightfisted world of pop accountancy.
She has done this on the strict understanding that none of the beneficiaries talk about it, “or ever write anything about me”, which they haven’t. It’s not just a personal-privacy thing, or control freakery, she claims, “I just don’t like the power relationship it implies”. She isn’t shy about the money per se. “I always wanted to have money…But the great thing is when you’ve got it, your life doesn’t revolve around money any more.” …’
Lovie Olivia is definitely an artist to watch. With an innovative style yet rooted in tradition, she has a strong command of the “old master techniques” yet you never get a sense that the work is derivative which can be the case when artists work in a traditional mold. She turns tradition on its head when exploring various topics. Her technique is very old world but her imagery is very surprising due to her lush way of painting. You are seduced by the beauty of her work and then you see that the conversation is equally as beautiful and critically well thought. She does her research before addressing a topic resulting a visual commentary which is never frivolous. You can catch her latest work at the LAWNDALE ART CENTER on 4912 South Main Street in Houston, Texas for the entire month of February 2010 as a part of the DARe to go FURther Exhibition.
Lovie Olivia uses her many interests cultures, music, literature and history to inspire her works. She’s fascinated by phenomena, coincidental and collateral interactions of societies. She has recently exhibited at The Community Artist Collective (CAC), Contemporary Arts Museum Houston (CAMH), Arthello Beck Gallery in Dallas, Project Row Houses and most recently, Space 125 Gallery and the Lawndale Art Center.
